2006 Santino Mediterranean Primitivo, Shenandoah Valley of California |

In a setting amidst the pastoral beauty of California’s Shenandoah Valley, Santino Winery stands as a tribute to excellence in winemaking. Since 1979, Santino has been producing wines from the soil of Amador County. Winemaker’s NotesAt one time this Italian variety was thought to be the parent for Zinfandel. It has the same genetic makeup as Zinfandel but the historical record has Zinfandel in California prior to this variety being recorded in southern Italy. We consider it a clone of Zinfandel but it has some notable differences in how it grows. Generally it ripens earlier and has slightly smaller berries than does Zinfandel. We planted this variety at two of our ranches and we are very happy with the results. The wine has good color and a distinct berry aroma so characteristic of Zinfandel (as it should). The tannins are moderate and the flavors juicy with a spicy finish. This medium bodied wine is perfect for summer and the outdoor cooking that it brings. Serve it with burgers, sausages, grilled lamb or pork ribs.VintageThe growing season of 2006 was about as average as a California year could possibly be. Normal levels of rainfall, not too hot or too cold, the usual hot summer and blessedly no rain at harvest. |
